Player of the Year Evening

George Inn, The Place, Ballare (for some) 3rd May 2008

So the season came to an end and to finish of proceedings the annual player of the year event was held at the George Inn, Girton. As 30+ people crammed into the back room the drinks began to flow, shots of vodka at 7pm along with a cheeky pernod and black put pay to me remembering much about this evening so be kind to me if I make any mistakes on the award winners.

After the awards the team found its way to the Place, Cambridges hottest new hotspot?!? With all the lads, plus the other 2 or 3 people in their more drinks flowed, then I have a memory block as to what happened next. I found myself in Ballare and then at home.

Galbo and Belsom (Most bullied player) were once again the butt of all jokes, falling asleep in Hotel Frost is not a wise idea, as Galbo found out Sunday morning but only when Eagles team mates asked him why he had a drawing of penis on his leg. Belsom suffered the same fate, as this picture shows.

Money Men too hot to handle

The Lakenheath Bowl 3rd April 2008

Girton visited the home of Kershaw Senior A Champions and the leagues money men for their last game of the season. On a swealtering hot day it took the lads a logn time to get going. A goal down at half-time from a rebounded shot parried by Jack Stevens was followed up by two second half goals.

Girton to be fair were never outplayed but failure to take their chances proved costly. Michael Frost got a consolation with a minute to go heading home a Peachey cross.

A less than familiar looking Reserve side went down 2-0 at Litlington. The personnel was the same but the line-up was drawn from the hat, with goalkeeper smithy left-back.

Mee's only gone and done it!

Girton Recreation Ground 29th April 2008

Matt Mee fired silenced all the critics on Tuesday night as he fired home his first goal in four years for Girton United. A delicate lob over the keeper from 20 yards sent the Girton Grandad into ecstacy. The goal was the sixth of seven as Girton romped to victory over a Mildenhall side who just couldn't cope with an inspired Girton.

A hat-trick from Aaron Maskell and one apiece for Simon Pawley, Steve 'OX' Barker and Michael Frost sealed the emphatic victory and moved Girton above their opponents into seventh with one game remaining.

Another 2-2 Draw

Girton Recreation Ground 26th April 2008

Girton were twice pegged back by Somersham as they had to settle for another 2-2 draw at the weekend to follow up the midweek draw with Hardwick.

Another early Aaron Maskell goal set Girton on their way, but the away side capitalised on some poor Girton play to equalise before half time.

Girton regained the lead from a Frost free-kick after substitute Sean O'Boyle hade been hacked down on the edge of the box, the left footers free-kick got up an over the wall and found its way magestically into the bottom corner.

The Somersham long throw eventually paid off as a header clear by Simon Pawley was struck back full on the volley beyond Jack in the Girton goal. The homeside will feel they had chances to win it throughout the game but couldn't see the game out to gain the victory.

The Reserves climbed up to seventh with their third win on the bounce against a Comberton side staring relegation firmly in the eye. A goal from second half substitute Joe Waller was enough to seal the three points, the right midfielder was on hand to fire in a rebound after his first effort had been blocked by the determined Comberton keeper.

After the realisation of the true threat of relegation the Reserves have hauled themselves into a more than respectable league position. Victory over Litlington in their final game on Saturday could see them rise further up the table as they can go as high as fourth.

Sawston put to the Sword

Girton United Football Club, 19th April 2008

On Thursday night Girton United Reserves out battled, out played and out thought soon to be BIS 1A Champions Sawston United. Goals from Ged Sylvester and Andy Butcher saw of a Sawston side who spent more time complaining than anything else.

This was another great result to follow up the victory over JM Sports at the weekend

Big Match: Honours Even

Hardwick Recreation Ground 22nd April 2008

Girton United kept the season bragging rights as they followed up there early season demolition of Hardwick with a 2-2 drew against their fearce neighbours. As always the build up to the game was tense, mind games were at a plenty but when it came down to it neither side could find the all important winning goal.

Girton drew first blood early on through Aaron Maskell's 20 yard effort that surprised the keeper before nestling into the roof the net. Hardwick then struck back through an own goal by the unfortunate Joe Waller. Hardwick thought they had snatched it late on with another scrappy goal but Girton struck late on through Ged Sylvester as he rose at the near post to head home a Mike Frost corner.

So Girton maintain there impressive record over Hardwick unbeaten in seven against the rivals from down the road.

Azza Exercet Sets the Tone

Girton United Football Club, 19th April 2008

It was a good weekend for both Girton sides as impressive victories over to good sides left smiles on all those associated with the club. The first team fired two goals past Soham without reply, Aaron Maskell's drive surely goal of the season, and Andy Mee's shindabydoozy volley bamboozled the opposing keeper to give Girton the 2-0 victory. The Reserves put aside their dissapointment of mid-week with a fine 2-1 victory of promotion chasing JM Sports with Craig Verrinder scoring twice.
